Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is a chronic condition in which individuals experience persistent, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and feel driven to perform repetitive behaviors or rituals (compulsions). While occasional double-checking or worry is normal, in OCD, these patterns become overwhelming and time-consuming, interfering with work, relationships, and daily functioning.
What Exactly Is OCD?
OCD involves a cycle of obsessions (unwanted thoughts, fears, or urges) and compulsions (repetitive actions performed to reduce anxiety). Common obsessions may include fear of contamination, need for symmetry, or intrusive, harmful thoughts. Compulsions may include repeated handwashing, checking locks, or ritualistic behaviors. Many people with OCD recognize their thoughts and actions as excessive, yet feel powerless to stop them.
Signs to Watch For:
• Intrusive, persistent, unwanted thoughts or fears
• Excessive handwashing, cleaning, or checking
• Counting, repeating, or arranging rituals to “neutralize” anxiety
• Inability to control compulsive behaviors despite awareness
• Avoidance of situations that may trigger obsessions
• Significant distress or disruption of daily life
